Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
In Powerful People (LJ 6/1/96), journalist Rowan reminisced about the famous people he has interviewed over his 50-year career. Here, he reflects on more private, but nonetheless meaningful, experiences he has had surfcasting in the waters around Block Island, 12 miles off the New England coast. The contemplative serenity, which may or may not be followed by the thrill of battling a large fish seeking to escape the tethered hook, is the aspect of the sport that the author finds most attractive. The waves, he says, can stir his imagination in wonderful ways. Of course, he likes the catching part, too, and gladly shares tips and techniques for enticing gamefish that he has learned from years of experience. For large fishing collections and public libraries with regional interest.AWill Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

Review
“[An] eloquent paean to surfcasting . . . this blend of angling wisdom, history, and craft moves with the increasing rhythm of the tides and will tug at the heart and–dare one say it–the soul of every fisherman.” –Dan Rather
“Rowan takes us to the roiling waters of Block Island as he casts (for stripers, blues, and bonito) and waits (for the pull on the line) and wonders (not about whether to eat seafood tonight, but about long-ago shipwrecks and the Indians who inhabited the beautiful rocky cliffs, about being alone in nature and engaging in a chess game of sorts with creatures of the deep). Wittily written, Surfcaster’s Quest is an adventure story close to home, for fisherman or not. It’s a wonderful tale of a not-so-old man and the sea.”—Greenwich Magazine
” . . . Rowan is no dilettante in this surfcasting dodge. You will marvel at the depth of his dedication to the sport and the enormous fun, challenge and spiritual blessings he achieves in pursuing it. Most readers will envy him; . . . on two accounts—the rewards he reaps, for one, and the poetic grace of his writing, for another. . . . . ‘You don’t have to be a fisherman . . . to enjoy this book. You must only relish solitude, the beauty of nature, the mystery of the sea, the elusiveness of its creatures. In these pages, you will learn about catching fish, but far more important, you will learn about the essence of your soul.” –Greenwich Time
