Crunch & Des: Classic Stories of Saltwater Fishing: Philip Wylie

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Crunch Adams, skipper of the trim cruiser Poseidon , and his partner Des Smith entertained readers of the Saturday Evening Post from 1939 to 1954 in these 22 tales about a charter-boat fishing business off Florida’s coast. A unique treat for fishing enthusiasts, Wylie’s jaunty stories are full of iridescent charm and rhapsodic prose that captures the tribulations and imponderables of fishing. While many are period pieces, the best of these romantic idylls have a timeless quality. Wylie ( Generation of Vipers ; Finley Wren ) is adept at quick, incisive sketches of Crunch & Des’s customers, illuminating their foibles, dreams and the pressures they’re trying to escape as they ply the indigo waters from Miami to the Keys. He also evinces sympathy for “fishing widows,” like Crunch’s sensible wife , women whose husbands are “at sea” in more ways than one.

City Fishing: Jerry Dennis, Ian Frazier, Pete Fromm, Paul Guernsey

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
London’s Thames River; a dump on the San Francisco Bay; Paris’s Ile de la Cite; Manhattan’s East River; and a minuscule pond in a Tokyo park near a “main defense establishment” are a few of the fishing sites featured in the anthology City Fishing. Most fishing guides (and people who fish) set their sights on the great outdoors Montana, Oregon, Maine anywhere but deep in the city. But these authors, including Ian Frazier, J.H. Hall, Dave Hughes and Charles Rangeley-Wilson, intrepid fishermen all, describe their urban fishing exploits with humor, graphic detail, social commentary and a peculiar sense of adventure.

From Booklist
The 17 stylish essays in this anthology bring wit and insight to bear on the intriguing paradox that fishing, despite bucolic associations, is a growing part of urban culture. Such well-known fishing writers as Jerry Dennis, Nick Lyons, and James Prosek, along with literary stars Ian Frazier and Pete Fromm and 12 others, muse on the experiences of angling in such citified climes as Paris, Tokyo, London, San Francisco, and New York. Other not exactly urban but certainly nontraditional fishing venues discussed here include Niagara Falls and the fountain at a Georgia junior college. The quarry ranges from trout, grayling, salmon, and stripers to carp, chubs, and panfish. Throughout, the essays engage the reader with both their original subject matter and the variety of entertaining and enlightening writing styles, from high comedy to poetic reflection. An outstanding fishing book. John Rowen

Caught Me a Big'Un...and Then I Let Him Go!: Jimmy Houston's Bass Fishing Tips 'N' Tales: Jimmy Houston, Steven D. Price

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Jimmy Houston Outdoors has been a popular TV staple (ESPN) for two decades. Here, writing with freelancer Price, Houston shares his accumulated wisdom about and experience with bass fishing. The pieces are very informal, brief and jerky-Houston says the book involved a tape recorder instead of a TV camera. Topics include technique, bait, boats, rods and how to remove a hook from the hand. Major factors in fishing for bass are water conditions, type of water, time of year and weather, Houston shows. Reminiscing about tournaments he and his wife have fished, he compares tournament fishing with long-distance auto racing in terms of the concentration required. This book is limited in scope; bass fishermen and ~ -women will appreciate it, but Houston’s medium is television, not print.

Circle on Bass: Bass Wisdom from a Master: Homer Circle, Rod Walinchus

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
His folksy colloquialisms may eventually have you grinding your teeth, but Uncle Homer (as longtime Sports Afield readers have come to think of Circle) offers a solid tome on angling for North America’s most popular game fish. There are three species of bass–largemouth, smallmouth, and Kentucky or spotted bass–but Circle sets his sights primarily on the largemouth. He gives us good chapters on the many types of baits and lures that tempt these fish, taking enough time to well explain how to use the lures, what they do in the water, and when an angler should use them. Indeed, this advice is so good that inexperienced anglers who, visiting a tackle store, are enticed by lots of pretty lures (that will probably catch more fishers than fish) should just close their eyes, head straight to this book, and then consider opening them again. That way, they will save lots on lures that only wind up in the bottom of the tackle box, gathering rust. Jon Kartman

Surfcaster's Quest: Seeking Stripers, Blues, and Solitude at the Edge of the Surging Sea: Roy Rowan

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
In Powerful People (LJ 6/1/96), journalist Rowan reminisced about the famous people he has interviewed over his 50-year career. Here, he reflects on more private, but nonetheless meaningful, experiences he has had surfcasting in the waters around Block Island, 12 miles off the New England coast. The contemplative serenity, which may or may not be followed by the thrill of battling a large fish seeking to escape the tethered hook, is the aspect of the sport that the author finds most attractive. The waves, he says, can stir his imagination in wonderful ways. Of course, he likes the catching part, too, and gladly shares tips and techniques for enticing gamefish that he has learned from years of experience. For large fishing collections and public libraries with regional interest.AWill Hepfer, SUNY at Buffalo Libs.

Review
“[An] eloquent paean to surfcasting . . . this blend of angling wisdom, history, and craft moves with the increasing rhythm of the tides and will tug at the heart and–dare one say it–the soul of every fisherman.” –Dan Rather

“Rowan takes us to the roiling waters of Block Island as he casts (for stripers, blues, and bonito) and waits (for the pull on the line) and wonders (not about whether to eat seafood tonight, but about long-ago shipwrecks and the Indians who inhabited the beautiful rocky cliffs, about being alone in nature and engaging in a chess game of sorts with creatures of the deep). Wittily written, Surfcaster’s Quest is an adventure story close to home, for fisherman or not. It’s a wonderful tale of a not-so-old man and the sea.”—Greenwich Magazine

” . . . Rowan is no dilettante in this surfcasting dodge. You will marvel at the depth of his dedication to the sport and the enormous fun, challenge and spiritual blessings he achieves in pursuing it. Most readers will envy him; . . . on two accounts—the rewards he reaps, for one, and the poetic grace of his writing, for another. . . . . ‘You don’t have to be a fisherman . . . to enjoy this book. You must only relish solitude, the beauty of nature, the mystery of the sea, the elusiveness of its creatures. In these pages, you will learn about catching fish, but far more important, you will learn about the essence of your soul.” –Greenwich Time
