Product Description
This volume is the fourth in a colorful, historical, five-volume series by author Russell E. Lewis. Dealing primarily with items made in the United States since 1940, the series details the fishing tackle industry and its changes until the closing of most companies in the early 1980s. Large, crisp photos, realized values, and company histories are once again components of this essential encyclopedia for collectors. It contains all-new material not presented in the first three volumes. Expanded manufacturer information and new companies are highlights of the book. A review of items from 1953 until 1972 will show collectors what was available at particular times from various companies. Then, the years 1959 and 1970 are given full coverage, as well as all Abu-Garcia items for 1966. Finally, selected photos of miscellaneous fishing collectibles and photos of rods and reels made from 1938 until 1972 round out the book. Nearly 1,500 photos make this a perfect companion to the authors other books

- Strategies for selective trout in clear water
- New patterns designed for spring creeks and how to fish them
- Simple explanations of the major hatches on spring creeks across the country
Spring creeks, those rare waters that flow right out of the earth–in whole or in part–are both a blessing and a curse for anglers. They are a blessing because the clear, cold, nutrient-rich waters grow abundant insects, which in turn grow and sustain large populations of healthy trout. They flow free of ice in the winter and run cool during the hottest parts of summer, providing year-round angling. In many ways, this bounty becomes a curse, because the abundance and steady supply of food can spoil the trout, making them less likely to take a piece of fluff and feathers. Many spring creeks are also small, their challenges enhanced by weed-choked runs and tricky currents. Mike Heck, expert fly tier and guide from southcentral Pennsylvania, the cradle of American spring-creek country, shares the tactics and techniques he teaches his clients to catch these tough trout. Heck includes his top fly patterns, tips on matching the major hatches of Tricos, Baetis, and Sulphurs (PMDs), and his thoughts on stealth and presentation. Whether you fish Letort Spring Run in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, or DePuys Spring Creek in Livingston, Montana, Hecks Spring Creek Strategies will help you become a more successful angler.

This book of spectacular full-color photographs of common eastern aquatic insects is a fly tyer’s dream.
For centuries anglers have struggled with their peculiar dependency on the aquatic insects that put the word “fly” in fly fishing, discoursing obsessively on how to replicate them with fur and feathers, and even about what to call them. Volumes have been written on the subject, but until now there has never been a book like Fishbugs.
Following the success of his first book, hailed as “the most useful book for eastern fly fishers since Art Flick’s Streamside Guide,” author Thomas Ames Jr. lets his photographic skills take center stage. His bigger-than-life studies of mayflies, caddisflies, and other waterborne insects, captured in extraordinary detail, allow you see them as never before. Fly tyers will appreciate them as models for their imitations, while naturalists and other lovers of nature photography admire them for their intrinsic beauty. His thoughtful prose examines the special characteristics that keep these fascinating insects at the heart of the angler’s gentle art and underscores their value as indicators of the health of our inland waters. Full-color throughout.

“A. K.’s tying instructions come from long experience as a professional fly tyer (a job where time really is money) but that’s not all of it. Plenty of people are very good at something, but few are so acutely aware of what they’re doing, how they do it and why, and almost none are able to explain it clearly. A. K. is among the best fly tyers I’ve ever seen, and his is the best instructor.”–John Gierach, from the Introduction”A. K. is one of the truly great fly tyers of our age. Because of his vast experience with trout, he has altered the way some favorite patterns are tied. Tie the flies the way he teaches in the book and use his advice for fishing them and you’ll take more fish. That’s a promise!”–Lefty Kreh”Few tyers are as outspoken and iconoclastic as A. K. Best. And few are right as often.”–Ted Leeson
In his fourth book on the subject, author A. K. Best offers a thoughtful interpretation of advanced techniques for tying trout flies. In A. K. Best’s Advanced Fly Tying, A. K. discusses tools, materials, and methods in elaborate detail, and the resulting fly patterns “may, in the right hands, fool a few more trout,” according to John Gierach’s introduction.

“No tier of that period was as creative in designing patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. This biography has been carefully researched and beautifully written.”- Keith Fulsher, master fly tier, originator of the Thunder Creek series
Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of Upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost, which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. This long-awaited book is both a history of the woman and the region, as well as a guide to the Stevens method. It includes color plates of original patterns, some only recently discovered, along with a biography illustrated with archival photos. The tying section lists dressings for more than 100 streamers, 65 of which have never been published.
Graydon R. Hilyard has been studying Carrie Stevens and collecting her work for fifteen years. His son Leslie, a champion fly tier, tied patterns for the book and contributed to the research.
