Hotel Secrets from the Travel Detective: Insider Tips on Getting the Best Value, Service, and Security in Accommodations from Bed-and-Breakfasts to Five-Star Resorts: Peter Greenberg

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Today show travel editor Greenberg (The Travel Detective) is determined to get travelers the best hotel rooms and perks for the least amount of money, whether they’re staying at a Holiday Inn or a Ritz-Carlton. His advice covers everything from how to tip, snag a nice room and make friends with the concierge to ordering room service and childproofing a room. His advice is a choppy mix of the valuable (e.g., a hotel’s Web site isn’t always the best place to find the lowest rate), the commonsensical (e.g., beware the charges that may be incurred for merely opening a mini bar), the gutsy (e.g., ask if there’s a handicapped-accessible room available when arriving at a hotel—even if you’re not handicapped—since those rooms are larger), the far-fetched (e.g., if room service won’t bring a specific dish, call the hotel dining room and ask them to deliver what you want via room service) and the paranoid (e.g., hotels that have in-room safes aren’t trustworthy). All the same, Greenberg’s chatty humor and use of detailed anecdotes will be appreciated by both jet-setters and those just beginning their travels

Rod Rage: Rhea Topping

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
You’re quietly working that favorite stream that you thought was your secret place when suddenly a fellow fisherman walks up noisily out of nowhere, accompanied by his large dog cavorting in the water. The movement unsettles the stream and the noise spooks the fish you were stalking. Does your anger end in rod rage? Has the stranger violated unwritten rules of etiquette that govern the sport? Master instructor Topping addresses such questions in this witty and wise collection about rules of the rod. Covering topics ranging from fishing salt-water flats to rules regarding boats, guides and international etiquette, she emphasizes that throughout history, civility and common sense have ruled the rod. Thus, in 1496 Dame Juliana Berners admonished anglers not to “fish in any poor man’s private waters without his permission and his goodwill,” while Topping’s own dos and don’ts include “wade quietly and slowly in company” and “don’t whoop and carry on when you hook a fish.” Though somewhat repetitive (because the rules all boil down to courtesy), Topping’s collection should serve as helpful, informative reading for avid anglers. On the Run: An Angler's Journey Down the Striper Coast: David Dibenedetto

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Using a new line with the old formula of the trout fishing-road trip memoir, DiBenedetto, an editor at Field & Stream magazine, creates an original debut about striped bass fishing. Following the fall migration from Maine to North Carolina, the author captures the fish’s rich history, which has seen it go from being one of America’s premiere game fish to near extinction, and its present state as the prime example of how a fish population can rebound thanks to the joint efforts of fishermen, conservationists and politicians. The combination of history and science fleshes out the fishing scenes and makes the book more than a young man’s romp down the coast. Adding to the local flavor at each stop is the cast of characters, some salty and some sweet, who accompany and guide DiBenedetto on his journey. Eschewing trite euphemisms for fresh interpretations of the natural world (”this wad of baitfish spinning like a disco ball”), DiBenedetto is both informative and entertaining. The imaginative language combined with forays into the uncharted waters of atypical sports like spearfishing, underwater videography and skishing (think ocean fishing without the boat) brings an adventuresome, open-minded attitude that much fishing literature lacks. Written during the fall of 2001, the book’s high point is DiBenedetto and his young nephew’s trip to New York Harbor when “a cloud still emanated” from ground zero. Fun and refreshing, DiBenedetto’s book will hook fishermen and may even net its share of landlubbers as well. Illus., map.

From Booklist
A story of the road, rod, and reel, this chronicle covers the author’s fishing trip in 2001, which took him from Maine to North Carolina. DiBenedetto sought the striped bass on its autumnal migration southward, seeking not only the fish but also the subculture it inspires. He persuaded guides of local renown to show him around their fishing haunts. Ocean bass fishing turns out to be many things: obsessive, competitive, and equipped with etiquette one breaches at one’s peril–cross a surf caster’s line and you’re dead. At one point, the author expresses concern that he might not survive a night of “skishing,” in which one swims away from shore to fish the striper. He enters the Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby on Martha’s Vineyard; tours the clubhouse of the Cuttyhunk Fishing Association, a Gilded Age hangout for wealthy devotees of the striped bass; and soaks up the urban ambience of fly-fishing. With background on the fish’s environmental ups and downs, DiBenedetto’s account will be of most interest to anglers. Gilbert Taylor

Death Taxes And Leaky Waders: A John Gierach Fly Fishing Treasury: John Gierach

Editorial Reviews

There are two things no dedicated fly-fisher can really have enough of: a decent selection of flies on the stream and a decent selection of John Gierach off of it. Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders should go a good way toward satisfying the latter. In this “greatest hits” of essays culled from Gierach’s previous collections, the genial wit and astute observer behind Another Lousy Day in Paradise, Dances with Trout, and Trout Bum reels in 40 of his favorite keepers. Considering the quality of Gierach’s writing, calling Headwaters a “treasury” is no fish tale at all.

Reading Leaky Waders is like recalling some memorably productive afternoons on the stream with an old fishing buddy. Writing about his sport and his adventures, Gierach is naturally writing about much more: “I’ve always tried to figure out what a story is about,” he’ll admit readily. “It’s something other than the fishing but that wouldn’t have come up without the fishing.” As in “The Purist,” an essay from The View from Rat Lake: it’s vintage Gierach, an excuse to use fishing to open a window onto human nature. “What is it about fly-fishing,” he asks,

that attracts … those people who must engineer a corner of their lives–sometimes a pretty large corner–where things have to be done properly? I’m not sure I know, but whatever it is, it’s why the sport can be used to define the very existence of the practitioner.

From there, he connects, with deft precision, the seemingly diverse strands of his own experience as a plumber’s helper, a fire on the Cuyahoga River, Zen, a little fishing history, a brief meditation on the dry fly, B.B. King, such noted anglers as G.E.M. Skues and Gierach’s own great fishing accomplice A.K. Best, Idaho’s Three Rivers Ranch on the Henry’s Fork, and a graceful dismissal of snootiness and pretension. It’s a skillful performance. Before you’re finished with Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders, you’ll find 39 more that are just as good. –Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
Gierach, perhaps the most original, entertaining and keen outdoors writer working today, is in fine form in this anthology of 40 stories, which the author has selected from his past books. In pursuit of noble trout, scrappy bluegill and other fish, Gierach (Trout Bum, Fishing Bamboo, etc.) has traveled from Texas to Scotland and back again. Here he treats readers to observations compassionate, scathing and frequently hilarious. Though once a philosophy major who harbored more serious literary ambitions, Gierach writes without a trace of pretension, a trait that sets him refreshingly apart from other fly fishermen, whose disdain for spin casters is mostly unwarranted and always tiresome. Gierach dissects the issue with his usual wit in one of the book’s finer essays, “The Purist.” Speaking of the fly-fishing elite, he writes, “To do it right you’d have to live naked in a cave, hit your trout on the head with rocks, and eat them raw. But, so as not to violate another essential element of the fly-fishing tradition, the rocks would have to be quarried in England and cost $300 each.” As the stories are all culled from past works, longtime fans will find nothing new except the largely unremarkable illustrations that introduce each chapter. But for those lovers of outdoors writing who are uninitiated to Gierach’s style, a finer collection of the author’s work could scarcely be found. (June)

Standing in a River Waving a Stick: John Gierach

Editorial Reviews

John Gierach, America’s favorite trout bum and author of such wise and humorous collections as Dances with Trout and Sex, Death, and Fly-Fishing, sets this volume in motion by testing the waters of the philosophical stream: “Lately,” he ponders, “I’ve been thinking about what makes a good fly-fisher, possibly the last fair question of the twentieth century that might actually have an answer.” In searching for that answer, he naturally begins to spin his reels, firm in the belief that the solution to any question or problem is to go fishing, “and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be.”

Of course, Gierach’s life is one extended fishing trip, so he sets out for pools and streams from Montana and Michigan to British Columbia and his own Colorado, musing along the way on subsets of that last fair question like technique versus inner grace, the number of fish you actually catch, the stories you come home with, and the company you choose to cast your lot–and flies–with. As expected with Gierach, the essays of this spirited array are less answers in themselves than provocatively enjoyable journeys through a richly literate and detailed landscape of interesting bugs (the chapter called “Boatmen”), obsessions (”Getting Stuck”), local streams (”Taking It Personally”), and even a memorial service held off until the fish were biting (”Jordan River”). In the end, Gierach is left where he began, “certain that on the day I become a truly sublime fly-fisher, all my failings will be overshadowed and all my demons will swim under rocks and stay there until I go away.” Until that day comes, he’ll just have to take solace from the way he continues to hook us pleasurably on the natural resources of his own prose. –Jeff Silverman

From Publishers Weekly
Everything from bears to the mysterious ways of ornery trout comes under the attention of Gierach in this lighthearted collection of essays, which is less concerned with the craft of fly-fishing than with the gestalt. Gierach (Another Lousy Day in Paradise, etc.) does hold forth on tying flies, watching bugs and other aspects of the fisherman’s art, particularly the equipment. Fly-fishing in remote areas calls for packing such necessities as an emergency fire-starting kit, a sweater and a coffeepot. For Gierach, fishing in the backcountry often leads “to excuses to stage an elaborate coffee break in a stunningly beautiful place miles from the nearest road, which makes the coffeepot as crucial as the fly rod.” He is at his most interestingAand interestedAwhen he turns into a riverbank philosopher. In the end, getting the fly to the fish may be a goal but not necessarily the essence of fishing, notes Gierach, who admits that he prefers to eat wild red meat and fowlAeven though fish is brain food “and I could use the help.” Readers won’t find Gierach’s favorite streams and ponds (he deliberately doesn’t tell) or how to tie a #20 Olive Parachute, but they will get a folksy earful on how fishing is similar to the way a dog follows its master “with nothing much in mind except to see what’s gonna happen next.”
