The Best of Field & Stream: 100 Years of Great Writing (Field & Stream): J. I. Merritt

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
With its emphasis on conservation and the outdoors, Field and Stream has attracted a wide readership. To celebrate a century of publication, the editors have amassed a sparkling collection of essays. There is only one woman contributor-Florence Tasker writes about a canoe trip to the Hudson Bay and across Labrador in 1907. We hear voices from the past-Zane Grey, Corey Ford, Archibald Rutledge. C.C. Gillham writes about mastodon steaks and other rare meats; Byron Dalrymple recalls fishing camps of the 1930s and ’40s; H.G. Tapply offers advice on the etiquette of hunting with another man’s dog. The essays embrace nostalgia, adventure and humor and will appeal to readers who enjoy the outdoors. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Northwestern Field & Stream debuted in April 1895, took its present name in 1897, and by 1917 led all competitors in circulation, advertising, and influence. Always a strong conservation advocate and a showcase for good outdoors writing, it boasted columnists Robert Ruark, Corey Ford, H.G. Tapply, and Ed Zern plus regulars such as A.J. McClano and Archibald Rutledge. The only stated basis for inclusion in this volume is good writing. There is no pattern of arrangement, but the 51 selections are evenly distributed among the decades from the 1990s through the 1950s; there are seven selections from before 1950, and the lone female author is from 1908. Field & Stream is in nearly every public and academic library, but those without extensive backfiles may find this collection a good representation of a rich tradition in sporting magazines.
